Intruder Alarms
My alarm sounds when we have a power cut. What does this mean?
It shouldn't do that, and current noise regulations require you to have the problem rectified without delay. There are a few possible reasons for your problem. A competent engineer will be able to identify the fault and carry out repairs with minimum fuss. Ideally, you are advised to contact the company who installed the alarm, failing that, an SSAIB or NSI approved company.
My alarm has stopped working. What course of action do you recommend?
If it isn't working, your security is now at risk and there is a high chance of your alarm sounding uncontrollably causing nuisance to neighbours and infringing noise regulations. Therefore you should seek the assistance of an alarm company as soon as possible. They will be able to test the alarm and correct any faults or advise what remedial work is required.
What do I do if I can't stop my alarm sounding?
It is very unlikely that it will ever happen. Under all normal conditions your alarm will respond to your user code or tag, if it doesn't appear to work the first time then calmy re-try, under most circumstances this will resolve the problem. In a worst case scenario and you really can't stop the alarm, it should silence of its own accord after around 20 minutes, giving you time to call an engineer for assistance.
How do I change my user code.
Refer to the user instructions that came with your alarm system.
There should be a section on how to change the user code in there. If you do not have the instructions then ask in the forum.
Fire detection
I run a small hotel. How often do I need to have my fire alarm tested?
It depends on the size of your hotel, but at least twice a year by a competent engineer and weekly by the designated responsible person. You should contact a reputable fire alarm company and ask them to inspect your premises and set up a regular servicing contract, which will ensure the legally required tests are carried out and that there will be an engineer available 24 hours a day for any urgent problems.
