In terms of features what are the major differences between MS Word and Open Office Writer? Ive already found that Writer can save files as PDF whereas Word 2003 cant, anything else worthy of note?

Yep, think the PDF creation and the cost are the 2 main features really.

I haven't got Office on this PC, I've had to stick on some of the others as some people in my family seem to moan about OOo for some reason, I think they just moan because it's different, not because it doesn't do anything. I use more features of various Office components than anyone else and I haven't hit any problems in the several years I've used it.

CutePDF also does free PDF creation btw, for any Office only fans.

You obviously have something else (Distiller, Acrobat Pro?) that puts a print to PDF button in Office. I have Acrobat Pro on another PC and it does that.

It creates PDF's and puts 'Create PDF' buttons in Office programs!

plety of no cost pdf printer apps to get that in word, and for me the killer feature OOo lacks is automation and vb. MOst db's i would think automate word to write letters specs etc. OOo cant do this (or can but not a language i know lol)

OOo doesnt layout some word files right, but if i were starting up i wouldnt buy it for just me

Cause the stupid &^%$£" from Brussels have stoped Microsoft from Marketing office with PDF. Adobe got upset. I say use MS office with one fo the PDF creation tools mentioned in this thread.

I would expect it to have manual mail merge but automation is when you auto genertae letters from within an application, reports etc. Its not just word, its excel, pp etc. All ms apps can be automated
