I've been having some signal difficulties on my mobile. At the suggestion of O2 I've changed from 3g to 2g and the reception is miles better. Is that normal? Or just an area thing? Or down to my phone?

Possibly a bit of all three.
The 2G service is more widespread and tolerant. 3G less so, and more susceptible to weak signals.
If you've recently chaged phones that can cause probs too.

Weak signal at our house. My old Samsung i780 seemed to be able to cope better than new phone.

Also: Reception used to be fairly static, but now I can watch the bars going up and down constantly. Whats that all about?

Have to disagree there. Ever set up a RedCare/GSM without a signal meter check ( We all have I mean in a dodgy area.)
Around Northampton springs to mind. The signal goes crazy and if its not correct no GSM. And it works backwards! The higher you get the worse the signal.

I had that on a Nokia a couple of years ago. Signal was terrible. They told me to turn off the 3G and it would improve. It did. But then, what's the point in having a 3G phone....

Completely irrelevant post here but I'm having issues with Three.... after 6pm the phone is unuseable and every conversation I have is garbled and misses every other word out even though I've got full signal.  Got to the bottom of it and that is that after 6pm is the busiest time for phone networks and three piggy backs the Orange network and you get the lowest priority.  I phoned India but they dont seem to care, so I've left them now and now with o2.

Also sent my old phone off for repair and because the litmus paper on the back of the battery is red they say its water damaged and not under guarentee and have charged me £20 admin fee because I wouldnt upgrade my phone and contract!  So check your white litmus papers on your batteries before sending it away. Was also in the phone shop and a guy with an iphone had a red litmus paper its tucked under the charger you need to look very carefully though.  That will cost him!!!

3 network is pathetic. It's ok for kids. Cheap & cheerful.
