Ive set up a wireless netgear router with a belkin wireless usb adaptor at the other end.

Question is it keeps losing connection.

Ive had it on my laptop, not to bad looses connection for a couple of seconds now and again but does not bother me, but on the computer down stairs which is directly under the router, No more than 4 foot away it keeps loosing connection and doesnt reconnect.

It was set for channel 11, changed it to 1 but no difference, should i go through all channels to if anyone is better or is there something simple ive missed?

Any chance of incompatability?

I want to download service pack 2 to the other comp so need a reliable connection.

Thanking you

try turning of any high speed options that are netgear specific. Also you can set to just 1 std, ie g and ignore b. What netgear is it?

First off, I'd bin the Belkin, they produce utter crap IMO.

Usually when you find wireless randomly drops it's a dodgy card at fault, this coupled with the fact it's a Belkin one, recipe for disaster.

I have to ask though, if the PC is 4' away and directly under the router then what's wrong with hardwiring it? Nothing much more reliable than good old wires.

belkin isnt the best but i have had reasonable experince with it,
I have a wgt 624 that i use as an ap, and had similar problmes with cutouts etc. Disablin gall the rangemax and speed enhancements fixed, and thats was with an old netgear 11b pcmcia card

Are you using WPA for your wireless connection?
You may find that the belkin wont support WPA, even if you update windows.

My money's on a conflict.
Upstairs computer has a Belkin card which linked to a bog standard wireless router downstairs...constant problems yet 2 laptops always connected straight in to wireless.
Changed router to a Linksys now Belkin card works perfectly.

WEP and WPA are encryption if that was wrong it wouldn't be intermittent it wouldn't work at all

ensure you have the 2 settings as attached screenshot, 'disable 108Mbs Features'
try bit positions for the extended reach, there is no point having them on unless its all netgear stuff anyway
