Shares in Toshiba have gained more than 5% as speculation intensified that the electronics giant is set to scrap its high definition DVD format, HD DVD.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7250068.stm

Whats this got to do with CCTV you may wonder?

well this post was prompted by some news mail from Tecton, they have been offering Blu-ray backup capabilities for a while now http://www.tecton-cctv.com/pdfs/BLU-RAY.pdf

Now we all know that its rare to have to burn more that a DVD's worth of footage to pass on as evidence, and when hard drives are removed its usually because there are no other means of getting footage from the DVR in the first place, so really there does't seem much point in using blu-ray.

But, with IP CCTV and mega pixel camerason the increase, Blu-ray will certainly hold its own in the not so distant future.

Why couldn't a manufacturer come up with a machine that played both formats, I mean it's not like it's the difference between VHS and Betamax, the disk is the same size and shape

Different type of laser read head, i was told.

I agree just like the VHS & Betamax argument, VHS won because it was cheaper and that was the only reason.

HD DVD and Blue ray need different lasers and while the size of the disk is the same it end there. Bluray uses blue / purple lasers which have a much higher freq so can read data closer together, all other formats use red and thats quite wide in comparison
